Bill Bryson "A Short History of Nearly Everything"
I borrowed this from Michelle right around the time we started dating. I read it and couldn't stop, one of the funniest and most enjoyable reads ever! I still claim that this book and the fact that Michelle had it was one of the first indicators that she was going to be my future wife! |

Dave Eggers "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius"
I loved this book when it came out a few years ago. It kind of kicked off the start of the hipster counter culture esthetic so it might be a bit pretentious by today's standards but I really loved it at the time. |

Michel Houellebecq "Possibility of an Island"
Michel Houellenbecq is one of the most original Sci Fi writers out ther today. He's pretty out there and his books can be a bit much for most people with some REALLY dark stuff but I love them! |
![]() |
Michel Houellebecq "The Elementary Particles"
The best Houellenbecq novel by far, his masterpiece. Again, he can be pretty out and this novel is no exception. This book is depresseing most of the way through but might have the greatest ending ever put to page! |

Chris Tarry: New Challenges, New Influences, New York
Check out this nice CT interview "Chris Tarry: New Challenges, New Influences, New York" by my friend Paul Olson over at AllAboutJazz.com |

Downbeat Review
"Tarry's excellent American debut is a resonant, single-minded bit of contemporary jazz ? Tarry's terrain is a muscular and acrobatic electric bass, a world where deep rock might saddle to deep swing in a moment. He's a softie with a spine, having mastered the borderland between mainstream jazz and various popular forms." - Greg Buium, Downbeat Magazine (Four Stars ****, Feb 07) |

Review of "Project 33" on JazzReview.com
"Persistent, infectious and memorable grooves; a strong sense of melody and composition; and a remarkable telepathic sense between the players makes for an album that will, no doubt, see Chris Tarry nominated for awards again this year." |

Review of "Sorry to be Strange" on All About Jazz
"That this quintet can sound so completely convincing regardless of the stylistic emphasis is a function of its broad collective resume. Cowherd, who first came to attention with Brian Blade Fellowship, can play with gospel-tinged authenticity on "Happy for Most" or atmospheric abandon on "Yeah Guys!." Weiss, who's rapidly becoming the most ubiquitous drummer on the New York scene, is just as capable of a rock backbeat as he is a more delicate swing." |

zOld Chris Tarry Interview on the origin of Metalwood
This is a long but really good interview if you're at all interested in the history of the Canadian jazz group Metalwood. I think it's the best source out there on how the band got started and other interesting stories. It's written by my favorite writer Josephine Ochej. She basically transcribed me doing a phone interview with her, it's funny to read yourself talking! Oh I was a young buck back then! Fun read though! |

Bass Musician Magazine Review
"Almost Certainly Dreaming" (featuring Dan Weiss (drm), Henry Hey (pno), Peter McCann (gtr) & Kelly Jefferson (sax)) is Chris' masterpiece, I believe. Every track is gripping and fluid. Liquid is the word that comes to mind... These guys play so well together and navigate some pretty deep grooves through some pretty oblique time-signatures.." |
|
Chronicle Herald Review
"I don't think I've heard a tighter, more consistently cooking, more continuously uninhibited improvising jazz band than The Chris Tarry Group ? All five musicians borrow each other's ears, or rather pool them to create their marvelous ensemble" - Stephen Pedersen - The Chronicle Herald |
|
|
Edmonton Journal
"Sorry to be strange is a cool balance of strong melodies, good grooves, and lively interaction." - Roger Levesque, The Edmonton Journal |
|
|
See Magazine
"(Sorry to be Strange) delivers a dozen songs laden with grooves and flowing lyricism." - Cam Hayden, See Magazine |
|
|
The Toronto Star
"Once tenorman Kelly Jefferson starts blazing in pursuit of pianist Jon Cowherd's outside flights that follow general weirdness and striking guitar from Pete McCann (love this guy!) on the second track ("Yeah Guys") of power electric bassist Tarry's new album, you realize there's a seriously hard, skittery edge to his complex, always-on-the-move hard bop- and rock-seasoned fusion." - Geoff Chapman, The Toronto Star |
|
|
Toronto Life Magazine
"Since relocating to New York in 2003, he (Chris Tarry) has further focused his virtuoso skills and is currently leading the Chris Tarry Group, a band that showcases some of Brooklyn's most dynamic younger players." - Stuart Broomer, Toronto Life Magazine |
