"With the fusion of acoustic and synthetic groove, Project 33 makes us hope that Chris Tarry reaches project 233!"- All About Jazz
Released in 2003 this album features the great percussionist Mino Cinelu (Sting, Weather Report, Miles Davis), Toronto Saxophonist Kelly Jefferson, Vancouver pianist Chris Gestrin, programmer Jesse Zubot, and myself exploring the electronica side of jazz composition with a difference.
I worte all the tunes, gave the sequences with all the programmed music to Jesse, he composed his own drum parts to the music, sent them back to me, I stripped out all the programmed music so just Jesse's drums were left and we played live to those drum tracks in the studio. Everything you hear on the album is played live except the drum parts.

When it came time to tour Groups Project in Canada I had to pick a group that would best represent the eclectic sound of that record. I changed the focus toward a guitar trio. After that tour in '96 we made an album and the sound of The Chris Tarry Group was set.

This album is much more acoustic. It features three different groups that I was playing with at the time. The main focus is on some trio playing between Tommy Smith, Ian Froman, and myself. The other groups are made up of Vancouver players as well as some old friends from Boston.

The jazz foursome known as Metalwood is made up of saxophonist Mike Murley, bassist Chris Tarry, keyboardist/trumpeter Brad Turner, and drummer Ian Froman.
The group formed in 1997, and released a self-titled debut album that same year; an album that was completed only days after the talented members performed together for the first time. Between that formation and 2003, the group completed one album a year. They also drew lots of earnest acclaim from both jazz reviewers and fans.
The debut album from Metalwood earned the band a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 1998. The sophomore album, Metalwood 2, brought a second Juno for the band a year later.
This album, "Chronic", their most recent and some speculate their last (2003) is considered their greatest recording.
"Jacko may have ruled the pop music scene for a good portion of the late '70s and early '80s, but jazz fusionists Metalwood recall a jazz scene from a similar time that was ruled by another Jaco - Pastorius, to be precise. The late Pastorius laid down the rubbery bass lines that made many a Weather Report album special.
Metalwood's Chronic, the group's fifth album, adeptly recalls the days when Weather Report, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and Miles Davis (to name but a few) were pushing jazz's boundaries into electric funk territory. Granted, Metalwood sound more revisionist than innovative, but their jazz-fusion-by-numbers is still a marvel to hear"- Darrin Keene

Best Contemporary Jazz Album
The lazy feel and relaxed soloing on the opening track, "Strollin'," set the stage for a smooth ride through a variety of jazz styles. The majority of Metalwood's songs lean toward the open funkiness of the Jazz Crusaders and late-period Miles Davis, but their orchestration is reminiscent of Weather Report. Although that invites comparison with the jazz-flavored jams of Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Metalwood's The Recline recalls the halcyon days of jazz/rock when musicians had a deeper understanding of post-bop forms and well before the term fusion became synonymous with the F-word.

Metalwood "3" is the album released by the band just before they signed with the fammed Verve Music Group.
The more I listen to this band, the more I love it. It's wonderful to hear four musicians "making music," not just "playing music." And that's a rare thing. The music is electric jazz, but it's not fusion. They don't play notes in their songs or solos just to play them. Every note has meaning, and feeling. They have they're influences, but I feel they are well disguised.
This band is not a bunch of players just trying to play and write like their "idols." Every player in Metalwood has energy, feeling, vision, and focus. Mike Murley is a find! A new voice on the Tenor saxophone. Brad Turner's trumpet is strong and just as clear as his keyboards. Ian Froman, and Chris Tarry are a mad rhythm tandem! As a whole, this band is one of a kind. - Amazon.com

For those of you who like it out, here's a recording featuring Chris and world famous jazz drummer Dylan Van der Schyff in a studio duo setting.
From a nether corner of the ambient world comes Sponge, a largely improvised and very eclectic take on the subject. The duet has conjured up a visceral sea of sound and imagination which is sometimes calming, sometimes disturbing, sometimes both at the same time. Don't mistake Sponge for another hypnotic, into-the-void wallpaper music CD. Sponge is too emphatic and embodies a greater musical presence than most ambient releases, largely owing to van der Schyff's deep background in improvised and new musics and to Tarry's multifaceted experience across the musical spectrum. 24 minutes of live improvised electronics.
"Each of the five pieces of assertive Ambient improvisation forms a lean, concentrated soundscape. Well worth hearing?" - Julian Cowley, The Wire
"[A] set that can be recommended equally to hardcore devotees of Brian Eno or the cutting edge of free improv." - David Lewis, Exclaim.

Dylan van der Schyff - drums, loops, samples
Chris Tarry - bass, voice, tape recorder, samples
