New Site & Book!

First things first, welcome to my new writing site. I decided to separate the music from the writing in order to make the navigation and information easier for all involved (most of all me).

Secondly, I’m psyched to officially report that my short story collection, How To Carry Bigfoot Home, has sold to the super-awesome Red Hen Press. It’s coming out in early 2015 in the U.S., which feels like a long way off (my kid will be almost four!), but with all the work that still needs to be done, and everything that goes into publishing a book, I’m sure the time will fly by. I’m still working on selling the manuscript in Canada, will keep you posted on that.

The manuscript was my masters thesis at the University of British Columbia, where I recently graduated with a degree in Creative Writing. I spent two years in their non-residency MFA program, and I have to say, it was one of the best experiences of my life. To go back to school at the age of forty is not an easy thing, but the faculty and students in the program were world class and made it totally worth it. I owe a lot to my thesis director Zsuzsi Gartner, whose patience and unwillingness to accept anything but my best, was what I feel really sold the manuscript in the end.

If there are any writers out there thinking of heading back to school after many years away, I would highly recommend the UBC Optional Residency MFA program. You’ll write your ass off, and you can do it all from the comfort of your own home. I wrote while on tour, wrote while my kid climbed on my back, wrote on the subway, and managed to do the degree in two years. UBC’s creative writing program is considered one of the best in North America, so check it out if you’re interested.

As for the new site? Well, take a look around. I’ve tried to make it easy to navigate. The events page includes my music gigs and readings, just in case a writer wants to come to a gig or vice versa. As the book release gets closer the reading events will ramp up. For now, feel free to join my mailing list and I’ll send you the cool updates as they happen.

Thanks everyone! I’ll be posting a lot of writing related material on this site, as well as some behind the scenes of the journey toward the book release, so be sure to check back often! Happy writing!
